Beginning Four Harness Weaving Deborah Chandler
This course will introduce you to several styles of four-harness looms. After a brief review of how to
wind a warp on a warping board, you will learn how to dress (thread) the loom from front to back. Then
you will learn how to read a weaving draft (pattern) and weave a sample project that includes plain
weave, several twill combinations, rib weave, weaving with 2 colors, and an introduction to double
weave.
Prerequisites: An understanding of the basics of weaving and how to calculate warp and weft
quantities.
Materials Needed: A four-harness loom with a 12 or 6 dent reed, two colors of yarn (4 ounces each),
scissors, heavy paper, ruler, and a shuttle. A warping board is handy, but not absolutely necessary.
Dyeing in the Kitchen Deb Menz
In this DVD, you will learn about equipment, safety, choosing basic dyes, making stock solutions,
SIMPLE Math for creating repeatable colors, and color mixing.
Kumihimo: Japanese Braiding Rodrick Owen
This course begins by introducing you to yarns, tools and equipment, then reviewing the process for
making a braiding stand (Maru Dai) from foamboard. You will learn how to read pattern layout diagrams
as you prepare four separate warps, each with a different end treatment: tassel end, finger point (blunt)
end, braided loop end, and wrapped loop end. You will learn how to read and follow braiding diagrams
as you work four different braiding projects: 8-strand spiral braid, 8-strand square braid, 8-strand hollow
braid, and 8-strand flat braid. Steaming and finishing techniques are also included.
Materials Needed: You can use many different types of yarn, ribbon, and wire. Most of the supplies
and other materials needed can generally be found in the home. To construct the foamboard Maru
Dai, you'll need three pieces of foamboard 20" x 30".
