Fiber Folks History:
A small group of us talked about starting a fiber guild in this part of the state for some time. Finally we said "Let's just do it!", so we did. Fiber Folks of SW MO was born in 2000. The initial group was made up of Judy Crouch, Danelle Howard, Helen Swartz, and Darlene Megli. Before the year was out, Robin Chew Hurd and Shirley Ingerly joined us and several others soon followed.
Our first project was starting the Fiber Retreat in Jefferson City, Missouri at Lincoln University. Wow! Little did we know what we were getting into! It has been great for the fiber producers, artists and businesses in MO. The Fiber Retreat quickly outgrew what our small guild had the "woman-power" to handle, so the leadership transformed to a committee of people from all over the state. As the Fiber Retreat event grew and changed, so did we.
Our small group grew as people heard about us and became interested in what we were about. We now have members from Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Illinois, and even Colorado! We have been involved in different service projects such as helmet liners for our troops, chemo hats, support for our local food pantries and an outreach program for new mothers. Currently, we make "Winter Warmies" for children and adults in need throughout our ever-expanding area.
Fiber Folks (with the support of the Missouri Sheep Producers) organizes an annual fiber festival called Fiber Daze. This event takes place every year on the third weekend of September. Check out our Fiber Daze pages for more details. Through the years we have sponsored classes with Anne Field from New Zealand, Laura Fry from Canada, and Patsy Z from Chicago. It's always a great time filled with fiber arts classes, a large vendor market, plenty of time for socializing and catching up, and of course, working with fiber.
If you're interested in the fiber arts, we invite you to join us in our journey to learning about these wonderful ancient and not-so-ancient crafts. With all the talent in our group, we're sure there will be someone in our group who can help if you want to learn a new fiber arts skill. If you choose to join the guild, the yearly dues are $10. You're welcome to visit us at the monthly meetings before you join.
The Fiber Folks of SW MO meets on the third Sunday of every month at 2pm. Join us in the basement of the First Community Church of Joplin, 2007 E 15th Street in Joplin, MO. Light refreshments are provided and you're encouraged to bring your current or completed project for Show & Tell.
